Definition
Threshold Sustain is the protocol that owns the lactate boundary work — Sweet Spot, classic threshold blocks, and over-unders all belong here. Standard 88% prescriptions fix duration at 20 minutes and intensity at 88% FTP. Veloarchitect dispatches Threshold Sustain calibrated to the Athlete’s drift tolerance: the system reads per-interval ZWO→FIT Delta across the 100-day record and assigns the block whose drift band matches the Athlete’s actual floor — an Athlete with a 6-W drift on a 20-minute Sweet Spot block receives 2×10 at 92% FTP, not 2×20 at 88%. The protocol respects the Athlete's lactate-clearance capacity as a longitudinal marker, not a single-session ceiling.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete: 36y/o, 268W FTP, Execution Precision 0.78 on the second 20-minute Sweet Spot block at week 0 (drift −18W). Week 1: protocol dispatches 2×12 at 90% FTP. Week 2: 2×15 at 90%. Week 4: 2×18 at 90% (drift −9W). Week 6: 2×20 at 88% (drift −4W). Mechanical Efficiency: 1.49 → 1.57 W/bpm. The block was rebuilt against the Athlete's drift tolerance, not a fixed weekly escalation. Execution Precision on the second 20-minute block at week 6: 0.94.
Common assumption inverted
Threshold Sustain is not "Sweet Spot at 88% FTP." Sweet Spot is one intensity band inside Threshold Sustain; the protocol also owns 92% threshold work and over-unders. The Athlete who treats Threshold Sustain as a single-intensity protocol misses the drift-tolerance signal — they push the same 88% session regardless of whether the body can sustain it. Veloarchitect reads the drift and rebuilds the block; the Athlete who overrides the rebuild produces a different adaptive signal the system did not request.
