A workout whose structure, target power, and duration are outputs of the current system state, not a pre-recorded library entry.
Definition
Protocol 10 — Adaptive Workout. The session the Athlete executes today is computed from this morning’s Readiness Ratio, the Failure Horizon projection, recent Execution Precision, the True Normal trend, and any discomfort log entries. The same Athlete gets a different session on a 0.62 readiness day than on a 0.94 day. The .zwo file is regenerated each morning; the Athlete does not pick a workout from a menu. Protocol 10 is the load-bearing mechanism that turns Whoop recovery, mechanical work, and execution telemetry into a single directive the Athlete executes against.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Monday Readiness 0.94. Adaptive Workout: 75-minute Threshold Sustain at 92% FTP, 3x12-min blocks. Tuesday Whoop recovery drops 18% overnight. Readiness 0.78. Same Athlete, same weekly plan, but the Tuesday session is rewritten to 60-minute Z2 endurance at 68% FTP with a 6x30s cadence drill appended. Mechanical work target drops 32% from Monday. The Athlete’s longitudinal Adaptation Rate is computed against both sessions, not against the planned plan.
Common assumption inverted
Protocol 10 is not a chatbot suggesting “easy today.” It is a deterministic control loop. The .zwo file produced Tuesday is the system’s directive, derived from telemetry, not a recommendation. The Athlete does not negotiate it.
