The Athlete’s 100-day personal baseline, computed from their own training, recovery, and execution history. Population norms are not a fallback.
Definition
True Normal is what the Athlete’s system *normally* does — the rolling 100-day average of their training load, recovery, efficiency, and precision. Population baselines are not used as a fallback when the Athlete’s own data is sparse. True Normal is the unit every proprietary metric in the system is denominated in. Two Athletes with the same Readiness Ratio of 0.91 can be in different physiological states because their True Normals differ; the system never loses that distinction.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
An Athlete who trains primarily at Z2 sees their True Normal efficiency tick up over six weeks. A 220W average at 145 bpm becomes a 230W average at 142 bpm. A new Athlete joining with the same Whoop recovery and a 0.91 Readiness Ratio would have a *different* prescribed session, because the system compares each Athlete against their own True Normal, not against each other.
Common assumption inverted
True Normal is not a target. The system is not asking the Athlete to return to baseline. The baseline is the lens through which deviation is read. The Athlete who trains consistently will see their True Normal move; that movement is the Adaptation Rate the system logs.
