Glossary · Readiness Ratio · Mechanical Work · Discomfort Log
Projected point at which systemic breakdown occurs if the current prescription is followed. Collapse predicted, not detected.
Definition
Failure Horizon is the system’s projection of when the Athlete will fail to execute the prescription if the next 72 hours of training continue as planned. The system flags the horizon *before* the Athlete misses a session or executes a 0.31 interval. Inputs include Readiness Ratio, recent Execution Precision trend, mechanical-work accumulation against the True Normal, and any logged discomfort (knee, back, sleep). When the horizon is inside 48 hours, the prescription rewrites before failure occurs.
Protocols: Protocol 11 — Failure Horizon; Protocol 10 — Adaptive Workout
Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Monday: Horizon reads 96 hours. Tuesday morning: Whoop recovery drops 14% overnight; Readiness Ratio falls to 0.79. Mechanical work over the last 6 days is 11% above True Normal. Knee Discomfort log shows a 2/5 entry from Sunday. Horizon collapses to 31 hours. Wednesday’s planned 90-minute Threshold Sustain is replaced with a 60-minute Recovery Spin. Thursday’s VO₂max block is held, but the .zwo target is reduced by 8% pending a Readiness Ratio recheck.
Common assumption inverted
Failure Horizon is not a fatigue score and is not Whoop’s strain. It is a forward projection. The Athlete has not yet failed anything. The system is acting on the trajectory, not the incident.
