Definition
Recovery Spin is the smallest dose Veloarchitect dispatches. It is not a workout; it is a metabolic intervention triggered by a specific signal: Failure Horizon collapse inside 72 hours, Readiness Ratio below 0.78 for two consecutive mornings, post-race return-to-load, or cross-referenced HRV Decoupling below the systemic threshold. The 50% target is below the Athlete's first ventilatory threshold; cardiac stress is minimal, but motion accelerates lactate clearance. The Athlete who treats Recovery Spin as "wasted time" and rides at 70% instead produces a different physiological stimulus (more aerobic, less clearance) and undoes the recovery intent. Recovery dispatch is logged against the Athlete's 100-day True Normal — the longitudinal record the system reads to confirm the intervention recovered the Athlete rather than merely occupied the day.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Monday night Whoop recovery drops 18% overnight; Tuesday morning Readiness Ratio 0.78; Failure Horizon collapses from 96h to 38h. Adaptive Workout rewrites Wednesday's planned Threshold Sustain to a Recovery Spin. Athlete executes the template; Execution Precision on the Recovery ride 0.94 (clean Z1). Thursday: Readiness Ratio rebounds to 0.89; Mechanical Efficiency held flat at 1.57 W/bpm (no degradation from the skipped Threshold block). Friday: Adaptive Workout resumes supra-threshold work at the original weekly schedule.
Common assumption inverted
Recovery Spin is not "punishment for a bad day" and not "skip the workout." The Athlete who skips Recovery Spin to do a hard ride instead will produce additional cardiac stress the system did not intend; the Failure Horizon projection tightens further. The Athlete who overrides Recovery Spin for a Threshold ride is rejecting the Failure Horizon read the system produced. Recovery Spin is the smallest intervention the system dispatches and the cheapest to override; the Athlete who overrides it pays for it across the next 5 days.
