The longitudinal trend signal that joins HRV to mechanical work. Decoupling reads when the Athlete's HRV is diverging from expected pattern relative to load.
Definition
HRV Decoupling is the system's measure of whether the Athlete's HRV trend is keeping pace with their mechanical work. Single-day HRV readings are noisy; weekly HRV trend, compared against the Athlete's True Normal, is signal. Decoupling reads as the gap between expected HRV (given the Athlete's load) and observed HRV. A decoupling of −8% over 4 weeks is the early warning of Systemic Degradation Threshold approach; a decoupling of −14% means the Athlete has crossed the threshold and deload is required regardless of subjective feel.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete logs 6 weeks at +12% mechanical work above True Normal. Week 4 HRV trend: −4% from baseline. Week 5: −8%. Week 6: −12%. Mechanical Efficiency flat at 1.60 W/bpm; FTP test reads 0W gain. HRV Decoupling crosses the −10% systemic threshold. Adaptive Workout scheduler dispatches a deload week regardless of Whoop recovery. Week 7 decoupling reads −4% as the system re-baselines.
Common assumption inverted
HRV Decoupling is not Whoop's strain or recovery score. It is a longitudinal trend signal. A high HRV Decoupling value is not a "bad day"; it is a pattern across weeks. The Athlete who reads −12% decoupling may feel fine; the system intervenes because the longitudinal data says the next supra-threshold block will not produce adaptation.
