The Athlete’s time-of-day performance envelope, computed from their own .fit execution history and morning Whoop recovery. Gates when high-intensity prescriptions should be scheduled.
Definition
Circadian Window is the system-computed signal that joins morning Whoop recovery to the Athlete’s longitudinal execution record. The system reads every completed ride against the time-of-day it was executed, then surfaces the window during which the Athlete’s Mechanical Efficiency and Execution Precision are highest. A 09:00–11:00 Circadian Window on a Tuesday does not mean the Athlete “prefers” morning riding. It means the Athlete’s own physiology and execution data jointly produce the best adaptive response in that window. The Adaptive Workout scheduler reads the window before allocating supra-threshold work.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Tuesday 06:30: Whoop recovery 87%, Readiness Ratio 0.91. The Athlete has logged 142 indoor sessions in the last 100 days; Mechanical Efficiency on sessions started before 09:00 averages 1.46 W/bpm; sessions started 09:00–11:00 average 1.61 W/bpm. Circadian Window reads 09:00–11:00. Protocol 10 holds the VO₂max session for 09:30 instead of dispatching it at 07:00. Execution Precision on the held session reads 0.93; the same prescription at 07:00 historically lands at 0.71. Adaptation Rate logs the +0.04 delta against the Athlete’s longitudinal record.
Common assumption inverted
Circadian Window is not a generic “morning vs evening” preference. Two Athletes with identical morning Whoop recoveries will surface different Circadian Windows because the signal is computed against each Athlete’s own longitudinal execution record, not against a population. The Athlete who trains consistently at 06:30 will read a 06:30–08:30 window; the Athlete who trains at 18:00 will read a 17:30–19:30 window. Neither window is the “correct” one.
