The longitudinal velocity at which the Athlete’s metrics move relative to their True Normal. Positive rates flag adaptation; negative rates flag regression; near-zero rates flag plateau.
Definition
Adaptation Rate is the system’s measure of whether the Athlete is actually improving. The Rate is computed per metric per week, against the Athlete’s own True Normal. Mechanical Efficiency moving +0.012 W/bpm/week over 6 weeks is a positive Adaptation Rate; the same shift over 2 weeks is a normal noise band, not an adaptation. Tracked across the four True Normal metrics (Mechanical Efficiency, FTP, Execution Precision, HRV trend), the Rate becomes the input that gates the next training block: positive Rate unlocks supra-threshold work; negative Rate forces a deload; near-zero Rate triggers a block revision.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete logs 6 Z2 endurance rides per week for 8 weeks. Mechanical Efficiency: 1.51 → 1.58 W/bpm. Adaptation Rate: +0.012 W/bpm/week. FTP test on week 9: +6W. The Rate is the larger signal: the Athlete is producing more power for less cardiac load. The Rate unlocks Protocol 3 — Threshold Sustain at 92% FTP for week 10, with mechanical work target raised 8%. Two weeks later the Rate shifts to +0.003; the system reads the shift and schedules a Threshold test instead of another Threshold Sustain block.
Common assumption inverted
Adaptation Rate is not a fitness score. A high Rate is not better than a low Rate in absolute terms; an Athlete returning from injury should expect a high Rate for the first month as the body rebuilds, then a normal Rate. The Rate is meaningful only compared to the Athlete’s own longitudinal record. Two Athletes with the same +0.012 W/bpm/week Rate are not equally fit; their True Normals differ, and the system never loses that distinction.
