The protocol that converts Mechanical Efficiency trend into Adaptive Workout cadence adjustments — pairing W/bpm data with training-block periodisation.
Definition
Protocol 11 — Mechanics is the system rule that gates block-level intensity on the Athlete's Mechanical Efficiency trend. The protocol reads 4–6 weeks of Mechanical Efficiency against True Normal and dispatches one of three mechanical-work cadences: ascending (positive trend, supra-threshold work permitted), plateau (trend within ±0.005 W/bpm/week, repeat last block), or descending (trend negative, deload required). Protocol 11 is what makes the Adaptive Workout scheduler respect the Athlete's actual engine state instead of the calendar.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete logs 6 Z2 rides/week for 4 weeks. Mechanical Efficiency: 1.51 → 1.55 → 1.57 → 1.58 W/bpm. Week 5 reading: 1.58 (no change). Protocol 11 reads the trend as plateau. Adaptive Workout scheduler repeats week 4's block rather than escalating to threshold work. Week 6 reading: 1.59. Trend re-classifies as ascending; threshold work permitted on week 7.
Common assumption inverted
Protocol 11 is not periodisation. The Athlete who reads "ascending" is not "ahead of plan" — they are merely permitted to progress. The protocol is a permission flag, not a target. Two Athletes with the same Mechanical Efficiency trend will receive identical Protocol 11 dispositions, even if their FTP, weight, or event goals differ.
