Glossary · Discomfort Log · Execution Precision · Cadence
The structured severity triage the system runs on every discomfort log entry — Protocol 9. Returns a clearance decision and a modified prescription.
Definition
Protocol 9 — Knee Pain Triage is the rule the system applies whenever the Athlete logs a discomfort entry in the knee region. The protocol classifies the entry on a 5-point severity scale, references the Athlete's recent Execution Precision trend and longitudinal Adaptation Rate, and dispatches one of three responses: clear (continue current prescription with monitoring against the Athlete's True Normal), modify (replace supra-threshold work with low-cadence Z2), or rest (substitute full rest days). Protocol 9 does not diagnose; it gates mechanical load until clinical input is received.
Protocols: Protocol 11 — Failure Horizon; Protocol 10 — Adaptive Workout
Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Sunday post-ride log: left knee anterior, 2/5 severity, appeared on the third VO₂max interval. Protocol 9 reads the entry, recent Execution Precision (0.91, 0.87, 0.62 across last 3 rides — declining), and Mechanical Efficiency trend (flat). Response: modify. Monday's Adaptive Workout replaces a planned 4×8 VO₂max with a 60-minute Z2 endurance at cadence 85–90 (low-impact), drops mechanical work target 22%, and reschedules the VO₂max block to Thursday pending a recheck.
Common assumption inverted
Protocol 9 is not a medical assessment. The system does not diagnose tendinopathy, patellofemoral pain, or IT band syndrome. The protocol triages mechanical-load exposure to the knee until the Athlete consults a clinician. A "clear" response does not mean "no problem"; it means "current load is within tolerable range based on the Athlete's own data."
