Protocol 15 — the structured transition that converts indoor-computed prescription into outdoor pacing, handling, and neuromuscular demand. Bridges the .zwo indoor intent with the .fit outdoor execution.
Definition
Indoor→Outdoor Translation is the protocol the Athlete executes when an indoor training block ends and outdoor performance begins. Indoor sessions produce controlled, repeatable mechanical work; outdoor sessions add wind, surface, group dynamics, and pacing variability. Protocol 15 computes a Translation Factor from the Athlete’s indoor True Normal and the target outdoor event (race, gran fondo, group ride), then dispatches a 3–5 ride re-entry sequence. The Factor is not a multiplier on watts; it is a redistribution of pacing, effort distribution, and neuromuscular priming. The Athlete who finishes Protocol 15 has an outdoor fitness they have actually executed, not an indoor fitness extrapolated to a road.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete completes a 4-week indoor block: 24 sessions, average Mechanical Efficiency 1.62 W/bpm, FTP 282W (post-block test). Outdoor event in 18 days: a gran fondo at 4,500 ft of climbing. Protocol 15 reads the indoor True Normal, computes a Translation Factor of 0.85 (indoor watts will produce ~85% of expected outdoor output over 4+ hours), and dispatches 3 re-entry rides: a 90-minute Z2 outdoor on day 1, a 2-hour rolling-terrain ride on day 4, and a 3.5-hour endurance ride at goal pace on day 11. The Athlete’s outdoor Execution Precision on the gran fondo reads 0.89 — strong — and the post-event ZWO→FIT Delta shows the protocol correctly redistributed effort to the climbing sections.
Common assumption inverted
Indoor→Outdoor Translation is not “get outside and ride.” An Athlete who skips Protocol 15 and attempts to translate indoor fitness to an outdoor event directly will under-deliver on the day and often over-reach on the first outdoor ride, producing a Failure Horizon collapse within 48 hours. Protocol 15 is the structured re-entry sequence the Athlete does not negotiate.
