Intensity Factor — the ratio of Normalized Power to FTP. Public-domain; Veloarchitect reads IF against the Athlete's Circadian Window and Mechanical Efficiency curve before allocating supra-threshold work.
Definition
IF is the public-domain intensity ratio; Veloarchitect does not redefine it. The Veloarchitect protocol: IF allocations are conditioned on the Athlete's Circadian Window and Mechanical Efficiency curve. An IF of 1.05 means different things at 06:30 vs 09:30 for an Athlete whose Circadian Window is 09:00–11:00. The Adaptive Workout scheduler reads Circadian Window before allocating supra-threshold IF, and shifts sessions to align with peak Mechanical Efficiency windows.
Protocols: Protocol 2 — VO₂max Repeats; Protocol 3 — Threshold Sustain
Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Tuesday planned session: 4×8 VO₂max at IF 1.13. Athlete's Circadian Window reads 09:00–11:00. Adaptive Workout scheduler shifts the session from 06:30 (default dispatch) to 09:30. Execution Precision on the held session: 0.93. Same prescription at 06:30 (computed from the Athlete's historical record): 0.71. Adaptation Rate logs the +0.04 delta.
Common assumption inverted
IF is not a difficulty rating. An IF of 1.13 is not "harder" than 0.85; it is a different intensity profile. The Athlete's response to IF depends on Circadian Window, Mechanical Efficiency curve, and recent Execution Precision — not on IF in isolation. Two Athletes with the same IF allocation will produce different Execution Precision values.
