For athletes converting indoor-computed prescription into outdoor execution. The Translation Factor is the structured handoff.
Positioning
Indoor training builds fitness; outdoor execution delivers it. The two are not equivalent: heat, wind, terrain, drafting, fueling, and pacing all shift the metabolic cost of a given power output. An Athlete who holds 280W indoors for 60 minutes cannot simply ride 280W outdoors for 60 minutes and expect the same adaptive signal. Veloarchitect’s Protocol 15 — Indoor→Outdoor Translation — computes a Translation Factor that maps indoor prescription to outdoor execution, calibrated to the Athlete’s outdoor conditions and target event.
The indoor→outdoor translator segment is the segment most damaged by “just do the same workout outside” advice. An Athlete dispatching an indoor 4×10 at 105% FTP and riding the same prescription outdoors will produce different physiology — heat shifts cardiac cost upward, wind shifts power demand asymmetrically, terrain shifts intensity distribution. Protocol 15 reads the Athlete’s outdoor conditions (temperature, elevation, terrain profile) and rewrites the prescribed power targets to deliver the same adaptive signal at lower mechanical cost outdoors. The Translation Factor is Athlete-specific and re-calibrated after every outdoor .fit recording.

Worked Example
Athlete: 36y/o, 274W FTP, indoor-built through winter. Target: 90-minute road race in 8 weeks, expected temperature 18°C, 1,200m climbing. Translation Factor baseline (cool indoor, ~18°C equivalent): 0.97. Week 1 outdoor: 60-minute Z2 at Translation Factor-adjusted 175W (vs indoor 180W). Adaptive signal delivered: 0.91 (close to indoor baseline). Week 4 outdoor: race-pace simulation 80 minutes with 2×15 at Threshold; Translation Factor 0.95 (heat shift); Mechanical Efficiency shift on outdoor Threshold: 1.58 → 1.61 W/bpm. Race Execution Precision: 0.93. Indoor→outdoor translation gap closed by week 6.
Common assumption inverted
Indoor→outdoor translation is not “just ride slower outside.” The Athlete who scales power by a fixed percentage for every outdoor ride ignores the conditions that drive the Translation Factor. Veloarchitect reads temperature, wind, terrain, and the Athlete’s own response, and rewrites the prescribed power targets per session. The Athlete who treats indoor and outdoor as interchangeable will under-deliver the adaptive signal on every outdoor ride and arrive at the race with a gap the system did not intend.
