Watts per Kilogram — the public-domain power-to-weight ratio. Veloarchitect reads W/kg against True Normal and Indoor→Outdoor Translation, not against category brackets or population percentiles.
Definition
W/kg is the public-domain power-to-weight ratio; Veloarchitect does not redefine it. The Veloarchitect protocol reads W/kg against the Athlete's True Normal and against Indoor→Outdoor Translation, not against cycling category brackets (Cat 4 = 2.5 W/kg, etc.). Category brackets are population-derived and ignore the Athlete's own longitudinal record. The Athlete's indoor W/kg at FTP and outdoor W/kg on a 4,500-ft gran fondo are different distributions of the same engine — Protocol 15 reads the Translation Factor between them.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete indoor FTP test: 282W, 70kg, indoor W/kg 4.03. Gran fondo at 4,500 ft of climbing, 5 hours expected duration. Protocol 15 Translation Factor: 0.85 (5-hour outdoor at altitude ≈ 85% of indoor FTP-equivalent W/kg). Athlete's expected outdoor W/kg at gran fondo pace: 4.03 × 0.85 = 3.43 W/kg. Adaptive Workout scheduler dispatches 3 re-entry rides calibrated to deliver outdoor execution at the predicted W/kg, not at the indoor number.
Common assumption inverted
W/kg is not a category qualifier. An Athlete with 4.0 W/kg indoor is not "Cat 1"; the Athlete is at their indoor power-to-weight baseline. The same Athlete's outdoor W/kg on a 5-hour gran fondo will distribute differently across climbs, surges, and recovery sections — Protocol 15 reads the redistribution, not the average.
