Training Stress Score — the public-domain composite of intensity and duration. Veloarchitect reads TSS against the Athlete's True Normal, not against a 7-day rolling CTL.
Definition
TSS is the public-domain composite metric developed by TrainingPeaks; it combines intensity factor (IF) and duration into a single training-load number. Veloarchitect does not redefine TSS; it reads TSS against the Athlete's own True Normal. A 100 TSS session means different things to two Athletes with different True Normals. The Veloarchitect protocol tracks TSS-against-True-Normal weekly accumulation; a week of TSS accumulation 12% above True Normal is the early warning of Systemic Degradation Threshold approach.

Closed Loop
The metric traverses the closed loop: Intent is the .zwo prescription the system computed against the Athlete’s True Normal. Telemetry is the .fit recording of the executed session. Adaptation is the longitudinal movement of the metric itself, logged against the True Normal and feeding back into the next day’s prescription via Protocol 10 (Adaptive Workout).
Worked Example
Athlete logs 6 weeks at average weekly TSS of 728; True Normal weekly TSS is 650. Cumulative overage: +12%. Week 4: Mechanical Efficiency plateau (1.61 → 1.60 W/bpm). Week 5: HRV trend −6%. Week 6: Adaptation Rate flips negative. Systemic Degradation Threshold flagged as crossed. Adaptive Workout scheduler dispatches a deload week: 4 sessions, total TSS 280 (vs True Normal 650). Week 7 recovery; Week 8 Mechanical Efficiency rebounds to 1.62.
Common assumption inverted
TSS is not a fitness score. A weekly TSS of 728 is not "harder" than 650; it is more load than the Athlete's own system has demonstrated it can absorb productively. Two Athletes with the same weekly TSS are not at the same load; their True Normals differ, and the system reads TSS against each.
