For Gran Fondo Finishers
For athletes finishing 100–160 km events with mechanical work intact. The system distributes load across 4–7 hours, not 40 minutes.
Positioning
Gran fondo finishing is a mechanical-work problem, not an FTP problem. An Athlete with 280W FTP who finishes a 140 km fondo in 5:20 has produced 1,100–1,200 kJ of mechanical work at sub-threshold intensities. Generic 4×8 VO₂max blocks do not build the metabolic engine to clear that work at 65% FTP for 5 hours. Veloarchitect reads each Athlete’s .fit history against the target event profile and dispatches the sustained Z2 volume the body actually needs.
The gran fondo segment is the easiest to mis-build with off-the-shelf plans. An Athlete with a strong FTP test but a 4-hour ceiling on sub-threshold work will hit the wall at kilometer 110 of a 140 km fondo, regardless of how strong their threshold is. Veloarchitect’s Protocol 1 — Zone Endurance — is the lever that moves the 4-hour ceiling to a 6-hour ceiling. Mechanical Efficiency, read across 8-12 week Z2 blocks, tells the Athlete whether the metabolic engine is responding. Adaptation Rate gates when supra-threshold work is added; it never gates against the calendar.

Athlete: 45y/o, 268W FTP, 1.49 W/bpm Mechanical Efficiency, longest Z2 ride in last 100 days: 2:50. Target event: 140 km fondo in 18 weeks, 2,200m climbing, expected temperature 28°C. Block 1 (weeks 1–6): weekly Z2 progression 2:30 → 3:30 → 4:30 → 5:30, 1 weekly Threshold Sustain at 88% FTP, daily Protocol 8 fueling calibration. Block 2 (weeks 7–12): weekly 5:00–6:30 Z2 with race-pace climbing intervals, weekly 4×12 Threshold Sustain at 92% FTP. Block 3 (weeks 13–17): taper + 2 outdoor re-entry rides at event pace. Mechanical Efficiency moves 1.49 → 1.62 W/bpm. Sub-threshold ceiling: 6:45. Race Execution Precision: 0.91. Mechanical-work delivery: 1,140 kJ at 64% FTP.
Common assumption inverted
Gran fondo finishers do not need higher FTP. The Athlete who adds 10W of FTP but loses 30 minutes of sub-threshold ceiling will finish the fondo slower, not faster. Veloarchitect builds the ceiling first and the FTP second. The Athlete who tries to compress both into a single block will arrive at the start line with a strong 20-minute number and a 4-hour ceiling, and bonk at kilometer 110.
